FINAL: Boston College 3 NC State 2
Raleigh, NC- On a night honoring its past alumni, the NC State Wolfpack (17-7, 7-7) played host to Boston College (16-12, 5-10) at William H. Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack entered the contest fresh off a road win at UNC in Chapel Hill for the first time since 1997. The Eagles came in winning their last contest against the Wolfpack in a 5-set match in Raleigh. The Wolfpack overall hold a 15-13 record against the Eagles, however the Eagles hold a slim lead in Reynolds at 9-6 overall. Junior Amanda Rice entered the match fresh off of her ACC offensive player of the week award after back-to-back 20+ kill performances.
The Wolfpack started the first set with a quick 6-2 lead off the hard-hitting Junior Amanda Rice as she continued to remain hot with 2 early kills. The early run led to an early timeout for the Eagles. The Eagles would cut the lead to 7-5 until Amanda Rice landed her 3rd kill of the night. BC would eventually tie the score at 9 before an Ava Brizard kill. Boston College would take the lead at 12-10 leading to the early timeout for the Wolfpack.
The Eagles would extend the lead to 15-12 before Amanda Rice landed her 4th kill of the set. The Wolfpack would be forced in to their second timeout of the first set when the Eagles took a 17-13 lead. NC State would cut the lead to just one with the score 20-19 Eagles. NC State would go on to take the first set 25-22 after a late run saw the Pack score the last five points.
Amanda Rice led the way for the Pack in the first set with 8 kills as she continued her hot streak from over the weekend. Riley Shaak led the Pack defense with 3 blocks. McDaniel led the team with 7 Assists.
The second set started with a quick three point run by the Pack and that would be followed up by a run from BC as they would score 4 of the next 5 points. The Wolfpack would respond with another three point run to force the Eagles in to a timeout with the Pack leading 8-4. Amanda Rice continued to stay hot in the second set as she tallied 3 more early kills with the Pack leading 10-5 early in the second. The Pack would extend the lead to 15-6 midway through the 2nd set.
The Pack would make it four points in row leading to an Eagles timeout midway through the second set with the Pack on top 16-6. The scoring run for the Pack would end at 7 straight as the lead balooned to 18-7 entering the stretch run of the second set.
BC would respond with three straight points forcing NC State into a timeout. BC would cut the lead to four on the back of a five-point scoring run to cut the lead to 20-16 late in the second set. The rally by the Eagles would be cut short as the Pack earned the second set win 25-22.
Ava Brizard led the Pack in the second set with 6 kills giving her 8 for the match. Amanda Rice added 5 more to her match leading 13. Jada Allen and Riley Shaak continued to lead the way defensively for the Pack. Shaak tallied four total blocks while Allen had 3.
The Eagles would take a quick 4-2 lead to start the third set. The Eagles would extend the lead to 8-5 as the Pack called their first timeout of the set. With the Pack trailing 10-6 in the set, the Pack cut the lead to 2 at 13-11 behind the sweet-swinging Amanda Rice who increased her team leading kill total to 16. BC would take a quick lead mid-set at 16-14, Rice would get her 17th kill. Boston College would extend the lead late in the third set at 20-15. The Pack would cut the lead to one late in the set with the Eagles still leading 22-21.
The Eagles would take the set 25-22 as the match moved to the fourth set. Rice and Brizard were the leaders offensively for the Pack totaling 18 kills and 14 kills respectively for the match. Rice added 5 more kills in the set and Brizard had 8.
The fourth set started with a quick 5-1 run for the Eagles forcing the NC State timeout. NC State would take a 10-9 lead after a run from the Pack led to an Eagles timeout. The teams would trade points midway through the fourth when the Pack would take a 17-14 lead. A quick 3 point run by the Eagles would lead to an NC State timeout with the score tied at 17. BC would take the lead at 22-20 before NC State took the lead in the back and forth set before the Eagles closed out the set 25-23 to tie the match at 2-2.
The Wolfpack were forced to a quick timeout early in the fifth set after the Eagles earned the first 3 points of the set. The Eagles came out of the timeout and took seven of the next 10 points to take a 10-3 lead in the set forcing the second timeout of the set for the Pack. The Eagles would then go on to take the 3rd set 15-7.
