1st Half:
Winston-Salem, NC- On a picture-perfect night in Spry Stadium, the NC State Wolfpack and Wake Forest Demon Deacons squared off in a rivalry match. It was the ACC home opener for the Demon Deacon women and was a rematch of last years game Raleigh. The first 45 ended in a 0-0 tie with the time of possession squarely favoring the Lady Deacs. Wake Forest held 64% of the total first half time of posession. Total shots were also squarely in the Deacs corner as they ended the first half with seven total shots and two shots on goal. NC State goaltender Olivia Pratapas made two saves to keep the score even. Sophomore Caiya Hanks and Junior Emily Murphy led the way for the Deacs with four shots and two shots. Wake Forest pressed the offensive attack while the Lady Wolfpack played impressive defense to keep the Deacons scoreless in the first 45. Wake ended the first half with a total of four corner kicks and NC State ended with no corner kicks.
2nd Half:
After the half, the Wolfpack and Deacons changed sides and both teams came out with more intensity and physicality. The opportunities continued to be available for the Lady Deacs, however they werent able to cash those chances in to scores. Fouls became an point of emphasis in the 2nd 45 with the increased physical play of both teams. The yellow cards were out in full force in the second half as the pace of play picked up tremendously and both teams were able to play more up tempo. NC State was able to capitalize on the more aggressive attack with a goal off the foot of a corner kick by Emika Kawagishi. Jade Bordeleau was able to put it in the back of the net for the first goal of the game for the Lady Wolfpack giving the Pack a 1-0 lead. The Lady Deacs appeared to momentarily tie the game in the 81st minute which ultimately was waved off due to an offsides penalty leading to a no goal . However it didn’t take long for the Lady Deacs to strike a game tie tying goal by Caiya Hanks in the 83rd minute, Hanks tied the game at 1-1 with a beautiful shot to the corner of the net.
The final score ended with a 1-1 tie and both teams finished out with a record of 0-1-1 in conference play. Both teams return to action on Sunday as the Deacs take on the Virginia Cavaliers at Spry Stadium and NC State will be on the road against the 16th ranked Duke Blue Devils.
