Raleigh, NC- On Sunday at Dail Soccer Park, the Wolfpack women’s soccer team (2-7-5, 1-3-2) played host to the Virginia Cavaliers(5-3-5, 0-3-2) on a beautiful day for soccer. The Wolfpack struck early in the first half with a goal in the 5th minute by senior Jameese Joseph on a beautiful assist from junior Fernanda Soto to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.

The Wolfpack continued its pressure as they struck quickly minutes later in the 11th minute of the first half on an absolute beautiful goal off the foot of Annika Wohner assisted perfectly by Hannah Jibril to give the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead.

The Cavaliers ratcheted up their offensive pressure after falling behind early. Virginia was able to outshoot the Wolfpack 6-4 in the first half. However, behind stellar goalkeeping by junior keeper Olivia Pratapas, the lady Wolfpack were able to hold UVA scoreless in the first half.

The Wolfpack ended the first half with 4 total shots 3 shots on goal. Virginia finished with 2 shots on goal.

The Cavaliers came out in the 2nd half with more offensive pressure and maintained possession for much of the first 18 minutes and finally broke through with a goal in the 64th minute to cut the lead in half 2-1. The goal came off the shot by Allie Ross and was assisted by Maggie Cagle.

Virginia had a huge scoring opportunity in the 77th minute of the match as the shot hit the top of the crossbar and nearly tied the match up at 2.

NC State ended the game with 5 total shots and Virginia finished with 17 total shots in the losing effort. This was the first home ACC victory for the Pack on the 2023 season and it was much needed win to end a game losing streak for the Lady Wolfpack. It marked the 1st win against Virginia since the 2009 match in Raleigh which was also a 2-1 Victory. Next up for the Wolfpack is a Thursday night match with the Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables.
